ARTISTS OF
EARLY ESTES PARK Estes Park, Colorado was an early haven for many artists. In the years before the Rocky Mountain National Park was created, Estes Park was already becoming known for its spectacular beauty, surrounded by the high mountains of North Central Colorado. Though there were many people living in the valley, Lord Dunraven fell in love with the area and decided to take as much of the ground as he could get his hands on , legally or not. He Began homesteading through surrogates (he was a British Citizen and could not own property here through the homestead laws) and acquired a large holding. He brought friends to hunt and fish the fields and streams and also artists whom he thought might appreciate the beauty of the place. Later the well known inventor F.O Stanley (of Stanley Steamer fame) came here for health problems and decided to make it a tourist mecca. He built the Stanley Hotel that opened its doors in 1908 and promoted the area, again attracting artists who further spread the word of the beauties of the peaks and valleys. Some of the early artists were, Richardson Rome, Dave Stirling, Lyman Byxbe, Charles Partridge Adams, etc. We currently have works by Dave Stirling (See Stirling Works) and Lyman Byxbe on hand which are pictured below. |
